Universities such as the University of Southern California, California State University of Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills attended Cerritos College’s annual University Mega Fair on Thursday, Sept. 12 in Falcon Square.
The University Mega Fair is an event in which well known universities are featured in order to help community college students decide where they want to transfer to after community college.
It also helps them know if their majors align well with the university they wish to transfer to.
Some institutes are private, public and specialized universities, where they tend to just focus on certain majors.
Each university had a booth and representatives were available to help students with any questions regarding the transfer processes and prerequisites to attend the university they represented.
Kinesiology major Michelle Castillo said that from the university booths present, she was looking to speak with USC and CSULB representatives for her major “because they have really good physical programs.”
Schools such as USC are private universities and they tend to cost more in tutition. However, representative Neelam Salva said that about “60 percent of USC students are financially supported” and that the school also helps with getting into financial aid programs and applying for scholarships.
Neelam also added what the school looks for in their applicants, “(We are looking for) students who show us they can take full time courses and be academically involved.”
Most universities at the fair presented prerequisites to the students wishing to transfer to their school, such as having academic competency in the basics of math and English and possessing 60 transferable units.
Two representatives from CSUDH said that they see around 300 students in their booth annually and require applicants to have at least a 2.0 GPA and have the basic requirements in math, along with having taken classes in speech and critical thinking.
Criminal justice major David Gonzales said he visited UC Irvine’s booth to learn more about the school and stated, “It was my first choice, they’re a well known university.”
Gonzalez said he felt that the fair was very helpful in figuring out where he would like to transfer.
