Quarterback Cody Clements believed the sublime performance at the homecoming game was because of their high tempo as the Cerritos College football team conquered Ventura College 56-27 on Saturday, Oct. 26.
“The whole team did what (it) (was) supposed to do and played at a high tempo,” Clements said.
Cerritos College football had not outputted this amount of points on the board since 2009.
“We finally came together and played like we’re supposed to be playing,” running back Ricky Carrigan JR. said.
Part of the quality performance came from their preparation for the game.
“We had a challenge. We challenged ourselves all week and we came out to play,” running back Elijhaa Penny said.
The team established its presence in the first quarter, scoring 34 – 13.
Aaron Williams, cornerback, intercepted Ventura College, scoring a 33 yard touchdown to finish the first quarter.
Cerritos College spin moves, strong defense and speed was what made the difference in this game.
With 42 seconds left until halftime, Clements succeeded a long throw to wide receiver Donaven Gumbs for a touchdown, leaving the score at 47-20.
Penny refused to take full credit for his four touchdowns in the game,
His force and speed being his driving force to his finding Ventura College’s weak spots.
“A lot of my success goes to the line, they just open the holes up and I just run and make as many people miss as I can,” Penny said.
Clements felt that Cerritos College’s defense really stepped up its homecoming game, against Ventura College’s tough offense.
