Residents at the Avalon Senior Center had many questions last Thursday about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s agenda, and his calling for a special election in November regarding Propositions 75, 77, 78 and 79.
“I am not wild about this election,” said Sen. Alan Lowenthal as he to answered questions about the governor’s motives.
Lowenthal said that he thought that cutting through education to have this election, was not a good idea. In regards to Proposition 77, he said, “I support that the legislators keep their hands off school redistricting but not if it uses the money for education to do it.”
Prop. 78 is for protecting Pharmaceutical companies on restricting patients to buy medication.
Lowenthal said that he had not seen all the details, but, “it still does no good because nobody really knows what is going on.”
In his opinion, Lowenthal believes that the Governor should have waited until next year to have an election, and he adds, “All the governor is doing is a sideshow because it is the wrong time (for an election).”
“All the ads for all the propositions are misleading and millions and millions and millions of dollars are being spent on all these ads,” Lowenthal added.
Students echoed the sentiment that Gov. Schwarzenegger should not have the special election in November and that he is the wrong man to be governor.
Maria Ventura, sociology major, joked, “He (Schwarzenegger) is governor of California and he is pushing to have this election it doesn’t make sense. If he runs to be president of the United States, I’ll move to Canada or England.”
Kenya Duval, special education major, says that the governor should give voters time to decide what to vote on for the special election.
As far as the job he doing, Duval says that the governor is, “cutting into education for all the students.”
It is well known that Gov. Schwarzenegger is running for re-election but, Casey Flanagan, culinary arts major, says, “If a student were running against him for governor, I would vote for the student.”
Flanagan added that he believes the governor doesn’t know what he is doing.
Likewise, Ana Serrano, nursing major, said, Schwarzenegger running for re-election “is a mistake and I think he is better off making movies instead.”
Serrano believes that the only reason he won is because “he is a public figure.”
Charlie Rorick, vice president of Avalon’s Residential Council, said that despite all of the confusion about the issues in this election, “after listening to Sen. Lowenthal speak this afternoon he taught me to keep an open mind and not prejudge, he did make me think.”
Rorick says that having this special election was also premature on the part of the governor.
Regarding the issues, Rorick said, “I’m on the fence.”
Resident President Bernard Einson agrees.
Not only does Einson think that the election is premature, he thinks this particular election is unnecessary and a waste of voter’s time.
“You know, movie stars make temporary politicians.”
Einson noted that the same thing happened after former Gov. Jesse Ventura of Minnesota served his one term. Ventura was an ex-wrestling star.
Einson says that he has always voted and stands by Lowenthal.
“He (Lowenthal) is a hard worker, so I trust his judgment,” Einson added.
“He is my representative and if I didn’t trust him I wouldn’t have voted for him.”
