People flocked to more than 40 booths that were operated by companies such as Knott’s Berry Farm and Target, as Cerritos College hosted the semi-annual Career Expo and Job Fair on Tuesday, April 8.

Defense organizations such as the Los Angeles Police Department, Coast Guard and the Marine Corps was there to inform students of job opportunities as well.

Sergeant Alfredo Mendoza, of the U.S. Marines, was there to make sure that students from the community area had the opportunity to get information about the Marine Corp.

“Whether it be the college opportunity, leadership skills or even job opportunities that can help them out to be successful in the Marine corp and definitely after,” he said. “We are looking for 18 to 28-year-olds, which happens to be most of the college environment itself.”

Damsels in Defense was there to empower and educate women about the importance of their personal safety.

Independent Damsel Pro, Jennifer Lester, was one of the two representatives for the booth and needed the help of Cerritos College students to help spread the mission.

“Statistically, college age women are four times more likely to be attacked,” she said. “I’m talking one in five women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.”

Damsels in Defense was also putting their tool bag on display, which included a taser, pepper spray and other self defense devices.

George Mariscal, chemistry major, was walking to different booths and picking up applications from the companies that stood out to him.

“I think that there is a lot of job openings,” he said. “I was on my way to the student center and I just ran into this. I wish I would’ve gotten a heads up.”
