Competing in their last pre-season game against Palomar on September 20, Cerritos College women soccer team won with a score of 3-2.
In the first 24 minutes of the game, Palomar scored the first goal, making it a struggle for Cerritos to come back in the first half.
“Physically and mentally we weren’t as prepared as we should be, just because of the field issues, but starting tomorrow were going to get ready for our season in conference.” Gonzalez said.
Forty-five minutes into the game, Liliana Leos (left forward) scored the first goal for Cerritos tying the game to 1-1.
The game went off into half-time with the each team in deep tension as the game was coming to its half point of ending.
When the second half started, 21 minutes into the game, Palomar scored their second goal, which gave them the lead against Cerritos.
It wasn’t to long after that goal, when Tiffany Shultz (mid-field) scored the second, two minutes after Palomar’s score.
As the game became intense, there many suspensions and fouls called on Cerritos, which caused the team struggle to come back.
“Not having everyone available whether it was because it was an injury or suspension, I think those where the major issues”. Gonzalez said.
All though the game was aggressive and intense, it didn’t stop Lilana Leos from scoring the third goal that led the team into victory.
“I’m satisfied with the win, but I think we could have done a little bit better”. Leos said.
With the focus and determination of completing their last pre-season game, the team is more motivated to win the state championships this year.
” Based on my past teams, this is my sixth year here at Cerritos and based on the talent the expectations are based on to win the championship”. Said Gonzalez.
Preparing for their next game in conference, the Cerritos women soccer team will be practicing on what they learned from todays game.
Janeth Arroyo(left defender)knows that when getting ready to go into the games there is no need to hold back, but to concentrate on organization and communication.
“We learned that every game counts no matter what, even if its pre-season game or if its not season it all goes to power points. We learn our lesson by going into every game and getting all the goals we can.” Janeth said.
As the women soccer team will continue into the season and bring forth their full capability into the practices and games, coach Ruben Gonzalez sees a lot of potential in this year’s soccer players.
“It’s expected when you come to cerritos and play for our team your always going to have a high ranking and be on a good team. We continue to get better and hopefully
at the end of the season where number one “. Gonzalez said.
