Cerritos used a 30-8 run to open the second half to catapult them to a 53-point debacle of LA Harbor.
The run turned a 10 point halftime lead into the biggest victory for the Falcons this season. This win eclipsed their previous high by 10 points.
“We just stayed focused the whole way through,” said center Aissha Baldwin.
Baldwin finished with a game high 20 points and nine rebounds.
Baldwin came out and scored the first five points for Cerritos to get them going and kept that same intensity throughout the entire duration of the game.
Head Coach Karen Welliver was not surprised with Baldwin’s play stating that Baldwin is very important to the team and she is very confident in what she can do.
Aside from Baldwin’s quick offense to begin the game, the beginning of the game was a little rough.
“We didn’t overall start the game the way we should have,” Welliver admitted.
According to Welliver, LA Harbor’s full court press and full court trap forced them into some early turnovers. With eight of their 14 turnovers coming in the first half.
Its safe to say that this win was a team effort. Judging from 10 of the 11 players scored for Cerritos.
Sophomore center Selena Romero had a rough start to the game but stayed with it and eventually got the ball rolling.
“A lot of time I hang my head when I start missing shots so I just stop shooting but my coaches and my teammates always tell me to keep my head high and keep shooting so that’s what I’ve been doing recently,” Romero claimed.
Romero would go onto finish with eight points and game high 12 rebounds.
The philosophy that allowed Romero to keep her head up is nothing new to this team as they are a very close knit team.
“It’s really important for us on the bench to clap it up and talk it up and encourage the players in the game so they can have that added motivation,” Freshman forward Ashley Flores said.
Flores, who appeared in all 25 games prior to her injury, is sidelined for the year with a torn MCL.
The Falcons will put their three-game win streak on the line at LA Southwest on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
