For a swimmer, competing in cold weather conditions is not always the best cup of tea.
This past Friday, Feb. 27 at Pasadena City College, the Falcons men’s swim and dive team did not acquire their greatest times.
Even though they defeated the Lancers by a score of 174-92, but lost to Mt. San Antonio College with a score of 175-100, the Falcons still felt like they sunk with time.
Head coach Joe Abing said, “We had a good meet, but a little bit hard swimming conditions. We were conceptive though. I was hoping that a lot of guys would drop time, but we didn’t have a whole lot of time drop.
“The guys were swimming more or less then what they have already done and I think the conditions has a lot to do with that.”
The Falcons won five first place finishes.
Butterfly stroke swimmer, Angel Rojas won the 50-yard freestyle and swam a solid 100-yard freestyle that placed him at third place with the time of 49.51.
Backstroke swimmer Jason Ly and breaststroke swimmer Albert Kim brought in points for the Falcons in both backstroke races.
Ly won the 200-yard backstroke with Kim leading in second place.
Butterfly stroke swimmer Joshua Owens won the 100-yard butterfly and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle.
Backstroke swimmer, Marlon Moreno earned a third place in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished in fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle, while individual medley Diego Lucas was third in the 200-yard IM.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ly, Moreno, Rojas, and Owens easily dominated the race with a time of 3:19.76. And placed second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.46.
Moreno said, “The team did good. But the weather was too cold. We got the same times that we had two weeks ago. When it’s cold and your standing on the block your muscles get tense and you have to do extra stretches, and it effects how you swim.”
Abing hopes that with this invitational he will be able to depict and make some changes with swimmers that will give his team the best opportunity to win for the next conference meet.
“We realize that we can make a couple of changes to swim a little better. Just kind of know where to put swimmers to change up the races a little bit,” said Abing.
Moreno also added, “This week we’re going to Cuesta and we’re going to do a better job. The weather is going to be warmer and it’s going to be better! Every week we’re trying to move forward to get better and better, so I am hoping we’re going to be able to do that this Friday.”
The Falcons will have their next meet this Friday and Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at the Cuesta Invitational.
