The season opener for the Cerritos College wrestling team will take place at the Bakersfield Duals on Saturday Sept. 12th.
Criminal justice major Oscar Martinez said, “This is my second year on the team I want to compete, but for now I can’t so I’m focused on cutting weight.”
He added, “I am determined to cut weight because at the moment I am at the boarder line between middle-weight and heavy-weight”
Kinesiology major Jennifer Anaya said, “I have been a member of the wrestling team for two years I haven’t competed yet because I have been trying to knock out all the hard classes first.”
She hopes the wrestling team succeeds in the upcoming matches and perhaps next year when she has finished most of her general education she will compete.
Pedro Narez, a criminal justice major, said, “I have been on the team for a year and I’m ready to compete.”
Business major Moises Hernandez has been with the wrestling team for a year and enjoys being a member of the team.
Hernandez said, “I enjoy wrestling because it is a sport that promotes staying active and maintaining a healthy diet because you have to watch your weight.”
He added, “This may be my first college level tournament, but I’m hoping my four years of experience wrestling in high school and practice here will get me some wins.”
Head coach Don Garriott said the team has been training for the Bakersfield Duals since the summer.
There are 10 weight classes in college wrestling ranging from 125 to 280 pounds.
“This season the wrestling team has 70 members with members in every weight class,” Garriot added
He explained that this season it will be nice to explore the team’s strengths and weaknesses.
The Bakersfield Duals will consist of seven teams with five matches.
