The K-16 bridge program counts with a total 262 Cerritos College freshmen and on Thursday, Oct. 15, less than 30 freshman attended a workshop that was provided by the K-16 bridge program.
The K-16 bridge program is designed to help incoming freshmen learn how to sign up for classes, what classes they should take for their career path and how they can get ready for the semester.
Carla Yorke, coordinator for the office of educational partnership and programs, said, “These are all freshman at Cerritos College and they’re learning how to go about picking out their classes, how do you pick classes that are going to be for your major… we want [them] to be taking the right classes and not just taking classes [to] fill up a schedule.”
Yorke also added that the counselors at this workshop talked to the freshman about how to pursue their individual career paths.
“We want them to start thinking about ‘if I take this engineering class or if I take this bio class… how does that tie in with my future of going into the world of work? So it’s just not about the classes, but it’s also about how do we move forward with our career choices,” Yorke said.
Freshmen at the workshop felt that it helped them and that it taught them several things.
Like Adrian Rodriguez, freshman and math major, said, “I learned about what I need to do to decide what major I want to follow.”
According to Yorke, there will be several other workshops like this for freshmen throughout the semester.
The next workshop is on Monday, Oct. 19, there is not set time on when the workshop will begin.
