Concerns continue over Cerritos College adopting a 16-week schedule.
The Faculty Senate met on Tuesday, Nov. 10 after a week off to cover the future of the faculty senate presidential voting and the possible change in schedule for the school.
The possible switch to a 16-week semester was brought up and created a back and forth debate between the senate members.
Some members felt the students would prefer the lighter schedule, others felt the move may be unnecessary and a few felt the 16-week schedule should be implemented into the current schedule.
A main concern about the switch is that the counselors would be working all year with no off time.
Career Services Counselor Traci Ukita was surprised to hear that the decision to switch schedules was split between faculty, after attending both 16-week forums.
“I’m ambivalent if we make the switch. However, it is virtually impossible to get transcripts to universities by July if the spring semester ends in June,” Ukita said.
Counselor Brittany Lundeen felt there were pros and cons if the lighter semester sessions were adopted.
“It maybe helpful for students with a lighter schedule, but it would create more peak seasons for the counseling department,” Lundeen said.
She referred to the fact that an additional registration period would be added and a winter session would add an even bigger workload for counselors.
The discussion continued and the topic will be brought up at a later date.
A draft for the by-laws of the faculty senate was presented.
The draft featured the by-laws for officers, election of the president, and meetings.
There was concern by many faculty about Article 2.1, which states that all nominees for the president shall be sitting senators.
Some felt that the nomination process should be open to anyone who was interested, while others felt “outsiders” should not be considered.
The decision was made to send the draft back to the committee and bring it back with the possible suggestions made.
A few different fairs were announced.
On Thursday, Nov. 12 Career Services will hold a Career Fair aimed toward business majors.
Multiple companies like Target and GAP will be there hiring students, which is open to all who are interested.
The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Career Services department and Transfer Center have joined together to hold a Transfer/University Fair next Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. by the Amphitheater sidewalk.
