What if there was an app for college that is similar to Facebook or Twitter? Where one can get all the necessary information needed and can contact professors through text messaging just like Facebook.
By next semester students can download an app straight to their phones that can do that and more.
Org Sync, the official name now being Falcon Sync, is a social media app that is designed to allow Cerritos College students to text professors and get alerts in their areas of interest, according to Vice President of Academic Affairs JoAnna Schilling.
“For example, if you are a business major, who is also a member of Phi Beta Lambda Club and also part of the Puente Program, you would join the portal for each of the areas and stay informed on the activities, events and information that are most interesting for you,” Schilling said.
What students can first find within the app is that they have to first log in with their college username and password and once logged in, they can write a brief profile and can browse through the different organizations that Cerritos College has and join them.
From there, the organizer from each organization will send students information based on whatever the students joined.
According to Schilling, the app will work like any other social media app out there and also said that Cal State Long Beach is also using Org Sync to help students get information.
Amna Jara, Student Activities coordinator, said that the program is costing the school $15,000 and that the funding is coming from the student equity funds.
According to Schilling, the goal that Cerritos College hopes to achieve with this program is to better increase communication with students and the college.
“We hope this program will help students engage with each other, the college and the many programs and activities available to participate in…”
She continued, “We hope that students will get better information they can use to find resources, peers with similar interests, and to increase student engagement on campus.”
Jara said that the app is going to increase and “improve communication between the office of Student Activities and the inter-club council.
