The Cerritos College softball team won 5-4 in a close game against Ventura.

The women got off to a slow start in the first inning scoring nothing, but in the second inning the offense got hot and scored three runs.

Third baseman and pitcher Jenny Navarro said of her team’s performance, “That game we had a purpose and we knew what we were going to do, we set a goal of not making errors, picking up our runners, getting our lead off on, and that’s the type of game that when we play that game we come out being successful because we all are pushed for a purpose just to win and play as a whole.”

Outfielder Kimberly Olivas added, “What happened in this game that was better compared to our loss at Santiago Canyon was that if a player was having a bad hitting game they still did everything they could on the field and to make their plays and get out and that is what helped us a lot as well.”

In the second inning down by two runs, with two runners on base Navarro stepped to the plate and hit a three run home run.

Navarro said of her three run homer that she was just trying to bring home one runner, “That one drove off of just trying to get a run in, just trying to get on the board because coach doesn’t really show us to hit home runs

“She really tells us base hits are what is going to win a game, and that’s all I look for 60 feet in a game was all I was thinking, you never know when you are going to hit a home run but it just happens.”

Assistant coach Bud Murray said about the game, “Ventura had lefties that threw outside and set their defense for us to push the ball to right field and that’s what we did all game.”

Murray said for his team having a tough schedule they are playing pretty well, “It seems like this spring we’ve played the top teams in Southern California, in our six games we’ve faced teams in the top ten so it hasn’t been an easy schedule”

“We do a lot of hard work here in softball, it’s hard work everyday and I feel good about where we are, but now we go to Fullerton and Cypress who are ranked up there,” said Murray of his team’s winning record during this tough schedule.

The Falcons now look forward to playing Fullerton Tuesday, Feb. 9.
