Double header? No problem.
The Cerritos College softball team took both games of a double header against College of the Canyons, in the first game 9-1 and in the second 10-2.
After coming off the team’s big 30-1 win against El Camino, the second largest victory in Cerritos’ school history, second baseman Jenny Collazo said, “We had no intentions of scoring that much, we didn’t score in the first but they did and we kind of took that personal.”
The team had to stay focused for its two games on Saturday.
In the first game of two, Cerritos took the lead in the fourth inning 1-0, then extended in the lead 4-0 in the fifth inning.
Cerritos went on to score five more runs in the seventh inning, while College of the Canyons only scored one in the seventh.
The women had little time to celebrate because just a couple of hours later, it had to play another game.
Outfielder Kimberly Olivas said, “We moved on, once a game is over you move on to the next game because you can’t play the same game to game, you learn from each team you play and try to do better and make your adjustments.”
Collazo also added to what Olivas had to say, “We came out focused and we came out strong.”
In the final game of the double header Cerritos starts the game off right where it left the first one.
The team scored one run in the first through fourth inning, while College of the Canyons scored two runs in the fourth.
Cerritos went on to score six more runs in the sixth where the game was called due to the mercy rule.
“I feel like we’re learning how to link up and play together,” Collazo said about the team finding its rhythm together.
Olvias said, “It is always a great feeling knowing that you figured out a way to contribute to help your team succeed, every game I try to come out with an approach, just concentrate on ways to help my team score.”
She accounted for four of the 19 runs Cerritos scored Saturday, Feb. 27.
The women are on a three game winning streak and have scored 49 runs this week alone.
Collazo, who was named CCCAA player of the week on Sunday, Feb. 28, is batting .400, with five home runs, 25 RBIs, and 22 runs this season.
“It feels great. I was really surprised, I didn’t even know that was like a title or honor until this week,” Collazo said excitedly.
The Falcons now look to play East Los Angeles in a conference battle on Tuesday, March 1.
Olivas said, “I’m already looking forward to be with my team for practice, but there’s something about game days[…]it’s always a good day.”
