It was once just used to reunite friends and families, advertise your company, communicate with your peers, and receive fast news information.
Although it’s still used for those things today, it’s primarily polluted with cyber-bullies who have access to a computer to post malicious content.
It has taken away our ability to interact with the outside world, and the youth is especially affected.
It is tainting how people can view the world as a whole and appreciate it, and it gives bullies another platform to destroy lives.
Social media inhibits a need for attention causing the user to say anything just to get more views, likes or retweets.
The big dog social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram allow a user to post tasteless comments or posts that can take a toll on another user’s well being.
Cyberbullies take advantage of the voice that social media gives.
By allowing it’s users to post rude things on pages; it’s easier to confront their foes with just the click of a button.
Social media dehumanizes celebrities and gives “fans” access to say whatever they like to people in the entertainment industry.
Recently, social media went in a frenzy after news broke of R&B singer Kehlani Parrish and NBA superstar Kyrie Irving had split on Monday, March 28.
It all began with a post on Instagram with Ex-boyfriend of Parrish and R&B singer, Jaron Brathwaite better known as PartyNextDoor, posted the picture of the two indicating they were back together.
Timelines were soon flooded with slander on the character of Singer Parrish.
That night, Kehlani Parrish took to Instagram a post to indicate her attempted suicide, after having seen all of the negative things written about her on that previous Monday.
Soon after Parrish’s post, people either recanted their previous hurtful posts with hashtags like #PrayforKehlani or some remained insensitive to the matter and continued to regard her suicide attempt as a joke.
Many lives have been taken because of just one tweet, Facebook or Instagram post, and any other social media site for that matter.
People don’t pay attention to the impact of their post and the damage it can do until it harms the one it is directed towards.
It’s very clear that the role that social media plays in our society today is to bully us.
It belittles us, destroys our self-worth and throws out harsh blows, but then tries to place a bandaid on the wounded because it was only just a “joke.”
It’s time for our society to be aware of the actual influence social media has on us.
So post wisely, before it’s too late.
