Marvels Netflix series continues to expand as the long-awaited gruesome anti-hero. The Punisher finally arrived on Nov.17.
A continuation of Marvel Netflix comic book series following Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist is more difficult to tell since the current climate of mass shootings.
The cast consisted of:
- Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher
- Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani
- Ebon Moss Bachrach as David Lieberman/Micro
- Ben Barnes as Billy Russo
- Jaime Ray Newman as Sarah Lieberman
With the difficulty of today’s climate with mass shootings, The Punisher does not shy away from reality and does not portray senseless acts of violence.
Strong issues are brought up, and the show does a great job of discussing the issues.
It brings up the topic of gun control and providing background checks for those who look to purchase a gun.
It does a fantastic job of showing how war veterans deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The series shows how PTSD disrupts the daily life of a human and not knowing how to deal with life after the war.
Each veteran deals with PTSD in a very different way from another which gives it authenticity.
For example, Frank Castle has this recurring dream of being woken up by his wife after he’s back home from the war and a soldier walks into the room unmasking himself, to be Frank Castle, himself and shooting his wife in the head.
Because of this knowledge that Castle has known the government had something to do with the killing of his family, Castle is on a search as The Punisher to kill everyone who had to do with his family’s death.
The show makes sure they show every killing by The Punisher- it has a purpose: that murder has a consequence.
If you are someone who does not like gore scenes and disgusted by a little glance of blood this show is not for you.
Castle teams up with Micro, also known as David Lieberman, to try and find all the people who were involved in the murder of his family.
Lieberman was an NSA Analyst who had leaked footage of a military team torturing an Afghanistan officer, eventually killing him.
Because of this, Lieberman was a wanted man by the government and killed him to their knowledge.
However, Lieberman survived, causing him to hide for his security and the security of his family. From then on, his prime objective is finding a way to get back to his family and needs Castle to do so.
Castle and Lieberman eventually team up with each other after Lieberman contacts Castle. Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss Bachrach have great chemistry with each other although their characters are the complete opposites of each other.
Both of the characters keep the other on check after they settle their differences and make a perfect duo for trying to reach their objectives.
The Punisher is successful in building its own story away from The Defenders the show did not need any special cameo from any superhero to be used as a filler.
Adding any of The Defenders for a cameo would have interrupted the flow of the series and made it feel out of place and unnecessary.
If you can handle violent, bloody gore, have a strong stomach and enjoy what Netflix and Marvel have brought to the table with their recent comic book series, then The Punisher is definitely a show to watch.
