Beyonce headlined Coachella as the first black woman to do so. She broke records and made history with her two-hour long performance dedicated to Historically Black Colleges and Universities most celebrated time of the year, homecoming season.
Beyonce released her two-hour long documentary, “Homecoming,” recapping her most talked about performance of 2018 at Coachella. The documentary gives fans a behind the scenes of rehearsals and the artist busy life.
Throughout the film, there are quotes by black leaders and poets who attended H.B.C.U’s. Everything from the costumes, color and messages were placed perfectly in the film, proving Beyonce can not only sing, but direct and produce.
The film is a like a fun concert/film showcasing her well-known performance and special scenes that fans do not always get to see like, the complications of being a new mother to a set of twins, the struggle of losing baby weight and managing a personal and work life.
Starting off the film is a recap of the eight months of practice before Coachella is shown. In the background is an interview with the famous poet, Maya Angelou.
“My job is to somehow make them curious enough, or persuade them, by hook or crook, to get more aware of themselves and where they came from (…) and I will do it by whatever means necessary,” quoted by Maya Angelou.
The quote mentioned is a foreshadow of what Beyonce is set to accomplish in her performance.
Although fans were given clips of the artist personal life it would have been nice if they were longer, but then again the film is about her performance. Most clips were sped up and barely visible. Scenes that were shown fully were the rehearsals and costume fittings.
Beyonce is not only seen as this mega-superstar in this film, she is also relatable and opened up about her struggle to lose weight and get her strength and endurance back in order to perform.
She talks about the hardships of being a new mother and heading off to work while leaving her new-born babies at home. These clips are small, but an essential reminder to viewers that she is a normal human being despite having millions of fans worldwide.
Viewers are given clips of both weekends at Coachella which fans appreciated since the second weekend was not live streamed.
“Homecoming,” showcased more than just her life but included every detail that went behind this performance and that gives Beyonce the title of “Queen of Detail.”
This film gives people an inside perspective of the performance and the importance it is to be culturally aware. It shows Beyonce is a true artist and inspires people to do the same no matter who they are. “If my country ass can do it, they can do it,” said Beyonce.
