Band CRX has released their sophomore album, “Peek,” the ‘70s, ‘80s influenced album is a 10-track album consisting of well-written riffs, but ordinary lyrics and colorless vocals.
“Peek” released Aug. 23 following their 2016 album, “New Skin,” and have slightly altered their sound and have gone with a ‘70s, ‘80s vibe.
The ‘70s, ‘80s influenced album is a 10-track album consisting of well-written riffs, but ordinary lyrics and colorless vocals.
“Peek” starts off with track “We’re All Alone,” which is upbeat and flashy, and that’s true to their changing sound, but Valensi fails to lure the audience.
Valensi’s range is extremely short, with being unable to hit high notes, but he sounds decent when his vocals are layered and include backup vocals.
“New Obsession,” the upbeat and fast paced track is one of the few tracks that weren’t as hard to listen to in its entirety, since Valensi’s vocals are layered and he has backup vocals.
Another track that is an easier listen than the rest is “Falling.” Valensi seems to have to give it his all to be able to produce vocals that are pleasing to the ear.
“Falling” has an upbeat melody, mid-way through the track is when Valensi ups his vocals and gives the audience a catchy, up-beat song.
While having only a few tracks that are seemingly okay, most of the tracks have a catchy beat and riff, it’s the lyrics and vocals that are dragging the band down.
As talented as a guitarist Valensi is, as a frontman singing may not be his forte. The album definitely has elements in which the band knows how to write an exceptional riff, but when it comes to vocals, they are a let down.
CRX seems like a band of rich dads who had nothing better to do with their time, so they formed a band to fill their free time with.
Maybe in the 80s, CRX would have been off the charts, but in today’s music world, they are kinda second-rate.
