The Cerritos men’s basketball team won their conference match on, Feb. 7 against LA Harbor with a score of 89-65.
This win gives the Falcons their 16th win of the season and fifth in conference play.
Despite having some trouble with shutting down the Cougar’s guard Ian Konek, who was knocking down all of his three-point shots in the first half, Cerritos managed to have a comfortable lead going into the half.
Cerritos held a 13-point lead over the Cougars with the score being 42-29.
In the second half, the Falcons did not let up on their lead as they applied more pressure on Konek defensively and scored 47 more points on offense.
Cerritos head coach Russ May made halftime adjustments for Konek and said “He [Konek] got going. He was rolling pretty good in the first half and we just had a little pride and said okay let’s not let that happen again.”
A key contributor to the Falcons scoring was freshman forward No. 20, Dorian Harris, who had 14 points in the game, with 12 of those points coming from the three-point range.
Harris shared how he was able to take those shots and commit to making them.
“I was just able to get hot tonight. They were feeding me the ball and I just kept on shooting them and making them,” Harris said.
Other key contributors to the Falcons’ scoring was freshman point guard No. 2, Joshua Belvin, who led the team in scoring with 17 points and in rebounds with nine.
Sophomore forward No. 3, Jacob Washington, was also a top scorer for the Falcons. He tied with his teammate Harris with 14 points and was second on the team in rebounding with eight in the game.
After the game, Coach May was able to share the things he loved that his team did and executed well.
“I loved that everybody played their role tonight, the communication on the floor and the unselfishness.”
Harris also had a comment related to Coach May’s about the teams’ unselfishness on the floor.
“We were flowing, we felt more like a team today instead of playing individually,” he added.
Sophomore point guard No. 1, Jalen Washington, thought he and the team performed “very well” and “amazing” but also shared what the team needs to improve on for the next game.
“Turnovers,” Washington said. “We have so many dumb turnovers that we really need to stop doing.”
The Falcons had 14 turnovers in the game. They were one turnover away from the 15 turnovers Harbor made.
Cerritos holds a one-game lead for first in their conference over division opponent LA Southwest whom they beat in the game before.
Cerritos will play their cross-town rivals, Long Beach City College, at their house on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
