Plaza Comunitaria is having a fundraiser for the Spanish Literacy program. The fundraiser is will help pay for the instructor’s that are involved in the Spanish Literacy program.
In last year’s fundraiser, Plaza Comunitaria was able to fundraise $2,200.
Daryabuth Martinez, program coordinator for Plaza Communitaria, hopes that they can get $2,000 more this year.
“All the money that the comes from the fundraiser will help pay for the salaries of the teacher.
“It is very important for us to get the money so the program can still be running,” said Martinez.
Plaza Communitaria is program that gives spanish speakers the opportunity to learn how to read, write, and speak in their native language. They can also receive their first and secondary education from Mexico.
Plaza Communitaria provides the Spanish Literacy program free of charge.
Students who are interested in participating in the fundraiser will have to pick up a special greeting card from the holiday tree in the Adult Education office which is located in CE-11. The special greeting card will consist of a picture of a student who is attending the program.
Graciela Vasquez, director of the Adult Education program at Cerritos College, said, “This is a great opportunity to showcase the program to the (students) because a lot of them aren’t aware of the programs we are offering.
“We want students to know that the program is available. You might have someone in your family that (has) literacy problems, and this program is open to the public for free.”
