Out of all the social media networks that students use on a daily basis, the one that distracts them the most is Facebook.
Facebook was brought into the media world in 2004 and gained popularity by the hundreds which in turn became thousands, leaving Myspace in its dust.
With its virtual games, communication access, and gossip channels, Facebook has become the number one ranked social media website according to mashable.com.
Below is a chart, courtesy of mashable.com which shows the number of visits to different social media sites during one month of the year.
- Facebook: 7 billion
- Twitter: 182 million
- Pinterest: 104 million
- LinkedIn: 86 million
- Tagged: 72 million
- Google+: 61 million
It estimates about 750,000,000 unique monthly visitors and that number continues to rise with each passing day.
This network creates a huge distraction for students because it attracts their attention to the profiles of friends and family members who also have a Facebook.
It’s only becoming more and more addictive to us as college students and it could deeply damage our attention span to classes and school related work.
If this continues, students’ grades could indeed suffer and then they are left to complain about their Grade Point Average come the end of the semester.
Writing on walls, liking your favorite pictures, television series, characters, and movies, is cluttering students’ brains with useless information which provides no real benefit to the student or the brain for that matter.
Why don’t students distract themselves with art or creative writing? Maybe a sport?
You should not be spending seven or eight hours a day glued to a smart phone or computer screen and refreshing your news feed to see what the latest gossip is, regardless of the social network.
Try something a little more beneficial for both your mental and physical health. Go out and walk around your block if there’s nothing else to do!
Distract your mind and focus on something that will possibly be a good investment for you and your future and stop staying up until three or four in the morning chatting with your friends.
Don’t waste your time on Facebook. Act now before it is too late.
Do what you need to to achieve your goals, because the world will not offer you happiness on a silver platter.
