On Oct. 15, 2009 a frantic phone call was made to Fort Collin Police Department by Richard Heene.
He reported that his six year old son, Falcon Heene, was trapped in a homemade balloon which had managed to take flight from their backyard.
Falcon was later found hiding in the family’s attic.
After an interview on CNN “Larry King Live” it was revealed by Falcon that the reason why he was hiding was because “we did this for the show.”
Msnbc reported that after many court trials Richard pleaded guilty in the attempt of influencing a public servant.
Msnbc also reported that Mayumi Heene, Falcon’s mother, pleaded guilty for filing a false report.
CNN News reported on Jan. 11, that Richard turned himself into larimer county detention center in Fort Collins Colorado to begin serving his 90 day jail sentence.
He will spend 30 days and nights in jail while the remaining 60 days of his sentence will be spent as work release, meaning if he has a job he would go to work and return to jail as soon as his work day is over.
In addition to Heene’s sentence he will also serve four years of probation and 100 hours of community service each year.
His wife Mayumi faces a 20 day jail sentence that starts at the end of her husbands’ sentence, in order to look after their children during his absence.
Msnbc also reports that the Heene’s owe an estimated $48,000 for the rescue teams that were sent out.
The Heene’s also owe the federal aviation administration $11,000 for momentarily shutting down a runway at Denver International Airport.
