“If we had healthier things in [the food court], even just Subway, we would get the healthy alternative of a sandwich over a burger, and it would benefit not only athletes but students as well.”
Athletic director Dan Clauss shared his thoughts on the food that’s provided on campus and stressed the importance of healthy eating not only as an athlete but for all students.
Whether the food that Cerritos College provides falls under the category “healthy” is anyone’s guess, but do athletes feel that they are being given alternatives to just a burger and fries?
The campus has many places for an athlete to grab a bite. Especially in the food court which can be seen as a hang out spot for many athletes.
Some of the eating alternatives that the food court has within are Taco Bell and Frantone’s Pizza.
“I never eat here, I know they have water, smoothies, and the student center has some healthy snack,” Cristina Hernandez, who is enrolled in physical education, said.
Though a Hernandez chooses to eat outside the food court, she enjoys the free fruit that the Student Health and Wellness building gives out.
The food court does involve what is considered “fast food” which would have that unhealthy connotation and the conclusion that things can be better.
Clauss said, “I think that ASCC is working on getting healthier food on campus, and the district has gone out and bid on companies to take the place of whatever is going on in [the food court] but I don’t know for sure where they are at with that process or what is happening exactly.”
Hernandez also agreed that the food court could use an upgrade, “They have some [alternatives], but it can definitely improve.”
Whether an athlete or not we can agree that there could be more choices for healthy eating especially when most of the time is spent on campus. Maybe having a Subway on campus is the way to go, but the main point is to be able to eat in the food court and feel healthy.
