A new safety alert that has been posted in multiple campus building entryways creates concern among the Cerritos College Community.
Former Cerritos College student Hyunseok Michael Oh, who may also be using the name Parker Michael Knight, is the individual who is featured on the safety alert that was posted on Nov. 21.
According to the safety alert, Oh has not made any threats against the campus community; however, he should not be on campus at any time for any reason.
Some question why is Oh featured on a safety alert if he has not made any threats against the campus community.
Psychology major German Sanchez said, “It makes me kind of wonder what is going on.”
Sanchez also adds, “Unless he is truly a danger to students on campus, his picture shouldn’t be up.”
Sanchez stated that the lack of information, such as the reason behind the safety alert, is causing people to speculate.
Psychology major Jocelin Pena also questions why Oh is featured on a safety alert.
“I thought that he did something really bad,” Pena said.
Pena believes that the safety alert should specify why Oh is featured on the safety alert.
Cerritos College Police Chief Richard Bukowiecki said, “He (Oh) was posted on a safety alert because he was kicked out of another college in another state. We (Cerritos College Campus Police) want to know if he comes on campus, we know it.”
Bukowiecki adds, “If he came on campus, it’s definitely a concern.”
Coordinator of Student Judicial Affairs Robert Chester stated that the safety alert is a precautionary measure.
According to the safety alert, Oh is a 36 year-old Asian male. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and has black hair and brown eyes.
The Cerritos College Police Department reminds all members of the campus community to follow basic safety precautions, including:
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Know what is typical and what is not.
- Call 911 from a campus phone or (562) 402-3674 from a cell phone to report suspicious activity.
- Be aware of parking lots, walkways and restrooms.
- Travel with others whom you are comfortable when possible, or call Campus Police for a Security Escort if needed.
- Let others know where you are going, especially if you might be alone.
- If you are uncomfortable, go to where there are other people.
- Headphones can eliminate your ability to be aware of your surroundings.
- Move confidently at a steady pace and make eye contact with people.
- Keep keys in hand when moving to a vehicle.
- Keep windows and doors locked.
- Check the interior of a vehicle before getting in.
- Go to the nearest open business or police station if you are being followed.
Bukowiecki states that Oh was suspended from Cerritos College in 2011.
Both Bukowiecki and Chester declined to reveal why Oh was suspended from Cerritos College.
Oh could not be reached for comment.
It is unknown if Oh was inspired to go by the name Parker Michael Knight due to the fact that the main character from the 1982 and 2008 television series titled “Knight Rider” was named Michael Knight.
Anyone who spots Oh on the Cerritos College Campus is instructed to contact the Cerritos College Police Department by calling 911 from any campus phone, or by calling (562) 402-3674.
