The Cerritos College Falcons softball team defeated Long Beach City College 7-3, at Nancy Kelly Field on Mar. 1.
Cerritos pitcher, Lily Cornejo (13-2), picked up her 13 win of the season in Thursdays, seven and a half inning game.
The Falcons scored first, with a two out RBI single by Brianna Quintana to score Right Fielder Shelby Blair in the bottom of the first inning.
LBCC responded immediately in the top of the second inning scoring three runs, two of which came from a double hit by LBCC’s designated hitter, Shanice Compton.
This was the only inning where LBCC scored, meanwhile the Falcons added two more runs to tie the ballgame 3-3.
In the very next inning Cerritos catcher, Ally Catania, hit a home run over the outfield wall, advancing runner Brianna Quintana across home plate, giving the Falcons a 5-3 lead.
Designated hitter Jackie Flores scored the final two runs for Cerritos College, with a homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Falcons went on to win the game after scoring 7 runs on 8 hits, with 2 errors in the game.
Pitching Coach Moke Rodriguez, talks about pitcher Lily Cornejo’s performance after allowing 5 hits in todays game, saying, “We just came back from a long road trip so we had a couple of days off and had a chance to heal some players up.”
He continues, saying, “We hit the ball when we needed to and Lily pitched good, so were making bigger strides as we go on.”
He also commented on the two homeruns by the Falcons, saying, “That was a big key because during the weekend (previous) we didn’t hit the ball as hard or as well as we’d like to, but it was a great team effort.”
This is the Cerritos College softball teams 14 win this season which takes their record to 14-3, 6-0.
They will go on to play Cypress College on March 3 at 3:00 p.m. on Nancy Kelly field.
