Freshman forward Diamond Roberts was able rack in 25 points to lead Cerritos in its 75-59 win over El Camino College on Saturday in the team’s final conference game of the regular season.
Cerritos College Head Coach Karen Welliver said, “El Camino was fighting for its playoff spot, it was a great game. If we would have lost, El Camino would have taken our spots. Cerritos played very well this game; we played very hard.”
In the first seven minutes of the game, the Falcons were neck and neck.
It wasn’t until Diamond Roberts was able to make three three-pointers within the first half to help the Falcons pull away.
By the end of the first half, Cerritos was in the lead, 36-23.
The Falcons were able to continue shooting well, being able to make six three-pointers during the second half, securing their win.
The win ties the Falcons with East Los Angeles College at second in the South Coast Conference, qualifying them for the second round of the playoffs.
Sophomore forward Andrina Rendon was also able to score high, putting up 19 points.
The Falcons were able to out rebound El Camino, getting 54, with sophomore forward Dershawna Staves leaving the team with 11.
Cerritos was able to get a bye from the first round of playoffs for placing in the fifth seed and will be playing College of the Canyons this Saturday a 7 p.m. at Gahr High School.
“College of the Canyons ended up in first in their conference, so it will be a great game. Canyons has a fast offense, so we will have to pick up the pace when transitioning from offense to defense,” Welliver said.
