The Cerritos College softball team defeated L.A Harbor College on Feb. 16, in a 9-1 conference victory at Nancy Kelly Field.
This is the seventh straight win for Cerritos College (9-1, 2-0).
L.A. Harbor scored its first and only run in the top of the third inning with a RBI single by right fielder Bernadette Cardenas.
All of the nine runs scored by the Falcons came in the bottom of the fourth inning; starting with a two-out RBI single by Jackie Flores to score right fielder Shelby Blair.
L.A. Harbor College finally ended the inning 12 batters later on a ground-out to third base, hit by Flores, who is Cerritos College’s designated hitter.
Lily Cornejo pitched five innings before the umpires enforced a mercy rule to end the game, at which point Cerritos College led by eight runs.
Pitching Coach Mike Rodriguez discussed Cornejo’s pitching future after she picked up her eighth straight win, saying, “ She’ll end up throwing 40 plus games this season.”
He goes on to say “We are fortunate enough here at Cerritos [College] to have good trainers who take care of Lily. We keep her body in tune so she can throw all year.”
Wind played a factor in the game resulting in several fundamental errors.
The National Weather Service reported that Santa Ana winds swept through the area at 10-15 mph while the game was in progress.
Right fielder Shelby Blair talked about adjusting her defensive strategy according to the wind, saying, “We had to play in because I know if the ball was hit over my head it would be exactly right at me ” .
The Cerritos College softball team’s next contest will be against Mt. Sac on Feb. 21 at Nancy Kelly field.
