The Cerritos College softball team, rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 2-1 against Riverside City College in a non-conference game on Feb. 8 2012 at Nancy Kelly Field.
Briana Quintana hit a solo home-run over the left field fence in the first inning, giving the Cerritos College Falcons an early lead.
Riverside scored shortly after in the second inning, tying the game at one run a piece.
After the Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, designated hitter Jackie Flores grounded out, allowing third baseman Krista Mele to score on a fundamental error made by Riverside’s shortstop thus ending the game.
Flores talked about what was going through her mind during the game winning at-bat.
“I had to get it done for my team, I had to put the ball in play and see what happens with it.”
Flores goes on to say, ” The first pitch was inside and then I fouled off the next few, until one came close enough and I got a hold of it”.
Head Coach Kodee Murray mentioned what she thought the team could improve on, coming into this game.
” The biggest problem in our last game was getting called for an illegal pitch, so we were spotting opponents a lead off hitter every inning,” she said.
Murray also said ” We need to get a little better at college pitching rules compared to high school pitching rules”.
Freshman Lily Cornejo pitched a complete game, earning the win after allowing 8 hits.
Pitching coach Moke Rodriguez talked about Cornejo’s strategy.
“Friday we had some illegal pitches called so we got in Lilly’s head today and told her, not to worry about it, go out and pitch her game and she did pitching like a whole different person playing an awesome game,” he said.
This is the Falcon’s fourth straight win, taking their overall record to 7-1.
The Falcons will go on to play Fullerton Junior College Feb. 9 in a make-up game, then return to their regular schedule Feb. 10 playing against Palomar Community College.
