Freshman utility player Joey Gonzales scored four goals to lead the Cerritos men water polo team to an 18-6 victory over El Camino College.

El Camino started the game off strong with a quick goal from freshman utility Kerick Boyce in the 7:36 minute of the first quarter.

Cerritos responded back quickly to tie up the game at one a piece with a goal from sophomore utility Isaiah Irvine in the 7:11 minute.

After Cerritos tied up the game off Irvine’s goal they went on a shooting spree, scoring seven straight goals to give them an 8-1 lead.

El Camino was not able to score their second goal until the beginning of the second quarter, which came from freshman utility Maxwell Lanich.

Lanich goal made the score 8-2 with Cerritos still in the lead.

Cerritos freshman utility Derek Dodson responded back by scoring two back to back goals to increase Cerritos lead to 10-2.

With two minutes left in the first half El Camino Freshman utility Ethan Peak scored to put the score at 10-3.

Cerritos freshman utility Joey Gonzales responded back by recorded his first assist of the game with four seconds left in the first half off a pass to freshman driver Chad Castro which he converted to a goal to give Cerritos an 11-3 lead to end the first half.

The second half was all Cerritos as they pulled away and showed their strength against El Camino off an early third quarter goal from sophomore driver Mario Ibarra.

“Cerritos has a very strong, fast, powerful team,” said El Camino Head Coach Corey Stanbury.

Cerritos did not let down as they held El Camino offense to only 3 goals in the second half.

Cerritos offensive also did not let up as they received goals from five different players in the second half which helped propel their offensive attack against El Camino.

Players that contributed to Cerritos second half goals were sophomore driver Mario Ibarra, freshman driver Juan Rivas, freshman utility Joey Gonzales, sophomore driver Isaiah Irvine, and freshman driver Derek Klotzer.

“Their players are a lot stronger,” said Stanbury.

Cerritos ended the game on a last second goal from freshman driver Derek Klotzer who scored from the other side of the pool to put the nail in the coffin as they beat El Camino 18-6.

The Cerritos victory put them at an overall record of 11-4 as they enter the Pasadena City College tournament this weekend.
