The Cerritos College women’s water polo team is led by Coach Sergio Macias, who has won a state championship in his first six seasons as coach.
Macias has won three out of six South Coast Conference Championships recently and in all six of those years he led all his teams to the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
In 2008, he coached Cerritos to The State Championship and last year he was named the 2010 South Coast Conference Co-Coach of the year.
He coached last year’s team to a No. 1 ranking, but they had an early playoff exit and finished with a respectable 29-2 ranking.
Last year’s leading scorer Shelby Gleason is a returning with hopes of improving her scoring abilities and helping her team to another conference championship.
Utility player Adriana Rodriquez who was part of the 2008 State Championship team is also coming back to play this year after being declared ineligible last year.
Former Cerritos High School player Sharon Ku is also going to be looked to this season for success.
Ku is a five-foot-nine inch goalie who Macias said has “great size, attitude and work ethic and very coachable. She’s a big presence in the cage and can make it very difficult for other teams to score.”
“If you want to be the best you have to play with the best,” Ku said.
According to coach Macias, Cerritos is stuck in one of the toughest if not the toughest conferences in Calif. where they face two of the toughest teams, Riverside College and Long Beach City College.
The main repeating goal Macias has for his women’s team every year is to beat Long Beach City and win a conference championship.
Last year the team had losses to LBCC.
Coach Macias is a big advocate for the belief in that Defense Wins Championships and to beat LBCC and have a successful season, the women’s team will have to come together and play hard.
