Coming off a surprising lead, men’s basketball pulled off a 62-61 win Jan. 15 in struggle nearing the end of the second half.
After this first division game Cerritos climbed to 11-9 while the Seahawks fell to 8-11 overall after this game.
The first half was unexpectedly dominating for the Falcons.
The Falcons went on to finish the first half in the lead 33-26 which was not expected.
This allowed them nice lead as a cushion going into the second half.
Cerritos prevented Harbor from scoring for the first 8 minutes of the second half and their lead increased to 46-33.
This 13 point lead dwindled as Harbor began playing the game that was expected from them all along after a free throw shot finally let the Seahawks back in the game in the second quarter.
‘We came to an early lead,’ said head coach Kenneth Shyne, ‘but later the game went its natural course and the Seahawks wouldn’t stop battling.’
The Seahawks went on to surpass Cerritos, making three shots in a row, but the Falcons managed to come back and beat out Harbor by one point in a last minute scramble.
The Falcons had a long vacation in between semesters and they felt it going into the game against Harbor’s tough team.
‘We had to get some dust off’ Shyne said, ‘they’re probably the highest competition in the league.’
Happy with the win and proud of how his team has coped with changes in coaching, Shyne proclaimed he was still looking at a division title.
‘We’re in a positive mode right now,’ Shyne said ‘,and we still feel we can compete in the division.’
Freshman Gregory Pope led Falcon scoring with 12 points while sophomore Ken Brown had a disappointing performance with only 5 points but managed to grab 7 assists.
‘I felt a little rusty after coming back from vacation but I tried to do the best’ I could do for the team,’ Brown said.
Aside from his personal performance, Brown was proud of his team’s effort and was glad they came out on top.
‘I have a great team but what we really need to focus on is our defense,’ Brown added.
Men’s basketball’s next home game will be against Los Angeles Southwest College at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday.
