After breaking its four-game winning streak and losing to LA City, 74-52, last Wednesday, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team took out its revenge on LA Southwest, beating it, 63-50, Friday night.
The Falcons are now 5-1 in the last six games and are co-leaders in the SCC with El Camino.
The Falcons are on the verge of making it to the regional playoffs but there are three more games to play.
“I think we should finish the season off strong,” head coach Karen Welliver said.
The Falcons started the game leading, 15-1, and prevented the Cougars from scoring a field goal in the first 11 minutes.
Forward Vanessa Faagata led the Falcons with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks but was sidelined toward the end of the game with an injury.
Maleta Daughtery also contributed with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.
“I was very pleased with the team tonight. We were able to find the open players and get rebounds,” Welliver added.
The Cougars went on a shooting spree pulling the Falcons’ lead to as little as four points but it wasn’t enough as Faagata scored the last six points of the first half.
The Falcons’ scoring continued in the second half but allowed more perimeter shooting opportunities for the Cougars.
The defensive slack from the Falcons resulted in a shoot-out between both offenses.
“We didn’t come out with the same intensity as we did in the first half,” Welliver said.
The Falcons will travel to co-leader El Camino on Wednesday to decide the best in the conference.
The winner will have sole possession of first place in the SCC standings.
The Falcons have three games remaining in their schedule before the regional tournament arrives on Feb. 25.
