MTV Tr3s visits Cerritos College once again on March 9 to take care of some unfinished business.
On their previous visit they finished filming the Don Omar vs. Aventura face off and started filming a new segment which was left undone.
The unfinished segment focuses on commemorating the 15th anniversary of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s death.
Host of MTV Tr3s show “ReMexa” Jazmin Lopez interviewed students asking them trivia questions or asking them to sing a song in honor of Perez.
“Late at night when all the world is sleeping, I stay up and think of you,” are the lyrics to Perez’s song, “Dreaming of you” and is also the song that Arianna Smith, theater major, sang to while on the show. Although Smith sang, “Dreaming of you”, her favorite song from Perez is “Como la flor.”
Marisol Romero, production assistant, was surprised that many students knew who Perez was, “We interviewed a lot of people and many knew who she was. I am shocked because the majority of the students attending Cerritos were young when she died.”
Perez died on March 31, 1995, after suffering a fatal gunshot wound in the back. Yolanda Saldivar, president of her fan club, was responsible for her murder.
Patrica Mata, political science major, recalls memories of Perez, “I had every record she released. I was tempted to do anything to see her.”
Perez was not only an accomplished singer in the Spanish world but she also had her hand in the fashion world. She designed her own costumes and opened boutiques.
“The thing I loved the most was her clothes that she wore and that she added her own little touch to each piece,” Lopez added.
MTV Tr3s is going to dedicate the last week of March to the life and death of Perez, during that time the segment will air.
