Sixteen cosmetology students won awards as more than 70 people attended the event during the Cosmetology’s Department 52nd annual Hair and Fashion Show on Monday in the Student Center.
But the overall winner of the Super Cuts competition was not announced as of press time.
Those 16 who won and received awards were in the following seven categories:

The event gave the opportunity for student of the cosmetology to showcase their creativity as well as show what they have learned throughout the program.
The cosmetology program consists of a minimum of 1600 hours clocked in of cosmetology class work.
Prior to the event itself, Crystal Bernal, president of the cosmetology club, said that hopefully the event will display the creative and artistic side of the event.
For Melanie Haro, cosmetology major and Dulce Rodriguez, cosmetology major, that is exactly what the event did.
Following the duo’s win for the fantasy category featuring its model Andrea Castillo dressed in a peacock outfit both agreed that the event showcase the hard work on into creating the outfit Castillo wore.
Haro said, “I am shocked that along with Rodriguez we won first place.”
Rodriguez, like Haro is in her first year of cosmetology and first fashion and hair show said, “The reason I got involved in cosmetology was because I have always loved makeup.”
As for whose idea was it to chose to be in a peacock outfit Haro said it was Castillo’s idea and it paid off winning first place.
Along she didn’t win an award Nina Ruiz, cosmetology major, said that it was the first time she been in a fashion show and was also nervous.
Nevertheless, stated that the support that was shown was great and like Bernal, agreed that there was more to cosmetology then cutting hair.
“There is work involved in cosmetology,” she commented, “so hopefully that is seen.”
It wasn’t just women who saw the hard work it took to showcase its talents.
Men such as Shine Lopez, auto technician major and Nismo Garcia, architecture major who came out to support Rodriguez and Haro both say that there is an appreciation for the work that is done.
“It’s was interesting to watch,” Garcia said, “but I’m not sure if I would be able to make a commitment to a profession like this.
And the reason for that, his explanation was because he said of the level of perfection that is involved in everything within cosmetology.
Lopez said that there have been instances where he wanted to be involved in cosmetology but had decided not to be.
“The one thing that like for any of these cosmetology students to do is my hair.”
Other then that, Garcia and Lopez were there just to be supportive to not only Rodriguez and Haro but toward everyone.
