At approximately 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday the Cerritos College Campus Police received an anonymous phone call from an unidentified woman who claimed that there was a bomb in the Social Science Building.
According to Lieutenant Richard Bukowiecki, upon receiving the phone call, Cerritos College Police personnel notified students and instructors to evacuate the building.
Classes scheduled between 11 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. were cancelled as a sounding area including a room-to-room search of the building was conducted, but Bukowiecki said, nothing was found.
The SS building was reopened at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and classes resumed.
Students expressed concern about security on campus and were unaware of the incident.
“I think that the police should tell the students what happened,” Jarvis Romero, nutrition major said.
He added that if the bomb threat was real that the entire campus should have been evacuated and not just where the bomb threat occurred.
“I think that the school should hire more people,” Joseph Lan, veterinarian major, said. “And also have more patrol for the night students.”
Stephen VanFossen, computer graphics major, said, “If this is a prank or if it is real the person or persons who did this is an idiot.”
Manuel Hernandez, business major, agreed.
“This (the bomb scare) is messed up.”
However, Aaron Garcia, undecided major, had a different perspective of the incident and said, “Threats happen anywhere (in schools).”
“If something did happened to the college then that’s when I would worry,” he continued, “but the SS building is still here so nothing did happen.”
ASCC President Paulo Amaral called the bomb threat “unfortunate” but would not comment further because he did not know all the details.
