The sweet smell of roses and the beautiful colors, and all of Colorado Blvd calling one lucky winner’s name.
Downey Rose Float Association has announced a once in a lifetime chance to ride a float in the 2005 Tournament of Roses Parade. This yearÃs theme for the parade is called, “Family Tradition.”
This the second time that the organization has auctioned off a ride on the float. Last year the silent auction the final bid was $5,000 for the seat.
A silent auction is being held for the one seat on the float. It will be running through the next two months. The opening bid for the seat starts at $1000.
Gary DeRemer, president of the association, said, “He hasn’t received any bids yet, and thinks that some people will be waiting until it gets closer to Dec.1 that is the day will find out who the top bidder is.”
This year’s float is called “Together with Nature,” and it is designed by Jared Sweeney. To participate in the auction, mail all sealed bids toDRFA: Attn: Float SeatP.O. Box 765Downey, Ca 90241
The bids will be opened on Dec. 1 and DeRemer will notify the winner on that day. The rider on the float needs to be the age of 12 or older.
The money raised from the auction will go toward the building of the float. DeRemer said, “Its cost approximately about $60,000 to build the float and in the end when the float is done its worth $200,000-$300,000.”
The association has participated in the Tournament of Roses Parade continuously since 1952. The first float was in 1913 and it also had some in the 30s and 40s.
