As the Cerritos College track and field team crosses the midway point, the men’s and women’s team are both ranked first among community colleges in California.
The men’s track and field team has been climbing its way up from the its 10th place pre-season ranking proving its strength.
Sprinter Kelsey Caesar, communications major, who is continuing to shine through out this season, has undoubtedly been a huge part of the men’s track and field team.
Coming in first at the California Relays for both 200-meter and 400-meter, Caesar, who ran 47.6 seconds in the 400-meters says he hopes to beat the Cerritos College record of 47 seconds flat.
His personal best is 46.6 seconds, but has yet to match it as a Falcon.
Caesar has placed first in every individual event that he has ran as a Falcon.
By doing so, he has helped his team go undefeated in the Southern California Conference so far this season.
The Falcons hosted the California Relays on Friday, continuing throughout Saturday.
The talent on the community college level was displayed along with other levels of competition.
Sophomore Nick Armstrong said, “There are way more teams at this event, ranging from freshman and sophomore teams in high school up to elite or open entries that are seeded according to event times.”
The men’s team has had to constantly prove its worth to be where it is now, doesn’t share that in common with the Women’s team.
The women’s team is the California Community College Athletic Association state champions, and women’s team is consistently proving why they deserve that title.
The meet started with Arianna Lugo, undecided major, breaking the school record for throwing.
The old record of 162’5″ was surpassed by her throw that ended up at a distance of 165’10.”
The women’s team may be depending on the depth that they have in throwing events.
“We have amazing talent in throwing this year,” Whitney Ashley, communications major, said.
“Stephanie Aliimatafitafi is consistently staying at the top in shotput, while I’m doing pretty well. I came in second for shotput and discus this weekend and hope to improve with my team as the season continues.”
Records continued to be broken as Sarah Muniz broke the school record of 11:48.63 in the 3000-meter steeple chase by running 11:35.14 coming in second, while Marlene Elizalde will have the second fastest time of 11:41.49 came in third for the same event.
Karen Guravska broke her own record in pole vault with a height of 12′ giving her the win for that event.
Guravska led Cerritos women in the javelin as well throwing, placing first, D’Auria Barker0 placed third and Rachel Butler placed fourth.
