“I would like to say that a bag full of pennies was donated for Hurricane Katrina victims by Child Development, ” ASCC president Paulo Amaral announced at the Board of Trustees meeting last Wednesday.
Katrina relief, welcoming new faces and disaster planning was also discussed at its first meeting of the year.
Furthermore, Amaral stated that he was selected by the Community College League of California to be a part of the Committee Advisory on Education Services.
He is the only student representative.
Of the honor, Amaral said, “I am very pleased about this amazing experience.”
He also said he is ecstatic that he will represent students through the state.
He also adds that the fundraiser held Sept. 15 raised $2,568.25 for the Red Cross for the hurricane victims.
New faculty employees were introduced at a reception before hand and Cerritos College president, Dr. Noelia Vela said, “It was nice to welcome them.”
Board member, Bob Epple, echoed the sentiment by saying, “The new faculty will fit in well at Cerritos College.”
Also announced by Dr. Vela was that she was a participant in the City of Santa Fe Springs “Fiestas Partias” held Sept. 17 and 18.
“I was the only representative from Cerritos College,” she said, “and it was a good spotlight for the college.”
Kimberly Kendricks, special education major, said, “Dr. Vela is setting a good example for the students by what she is doing.”
“There will be a good update on the continuing disaster project,” said, William Farmer, Jr.,Vice President of Academic Affairs.
The project will help the campus deal with a major earthquake. “Expect to hear a report soon,” Farmer said.
