A 19-year-old female student was sexually assaulted on campus Sept. 15.
Lt. Richard Bukowiecki, Cerritos College campus police, said, the attack, “happened at 5:17 p.m. near the south end of the Physical Education building.”
Students were not aware of the attack.
However, “In general,” Brenda Arjona, music major, said, “there is not a lot of security on campus.”
She added that one of her best friends takes classes at night and she said that attacks on female students can happen in any area where there is not a lot of people.
Jacky Medina agrees that there is lack of security for students on campus.
In addition, Violeta Medina, psychology major, says that she sees “one or maybe two police cars.”
In her view Medina says that cops are more interested in giving students parking tickets “than being more focused on student safety.”
Her advice, when walking alone especially at night is “Don’t!”
Also, she suggests that campus police need to have more officers on patrol or have the police survey campus in golf carts in order for students to feel safe.
The suspect is described as a male, Hispanic or African American, 18 or 19 years old, 6 feet 1 inches tall, and approximately 130 lbs.
He was last seen wearing a red short-sleeve shirt with dark pants. He was standing in the grass between the pool and weight room area.
The victim was walking towards parking lot C-13. The suspect tried to initiate conversation with the victim as she walked by and when she didn’t engage, he attacked her.
Lt. Bukowiecki said that “there are no witnesses.”
Anyone with information about the attack or who can help identify the suspect are being asked to call (562) 860-2451 ext. 2327
