Commissioner of External Affairs Michael Barrita faced tough questions from Senate Liaison Alok Barot has to why it was important to have a “Know Your Rights” handout in Spanish last Wednesday during the ASCC Senate meeting.
Barrita, who is also president of the Political Science club, is currently working on having a campaign to make student aware of their rights.
He commented that there is a high population of Hispanics that attend Cerritos and that there are those who are not fluent in English.
That is why the thought of having the flyers in English had been discussed among him and others within the ASCC.
However, Barot was quick to question why Spanish was the focus when in fact there are students who not only speak Spanish but other language has well.
“Why is it important just to focus on that language?”
Barrita continuously emphasized the reason but Barot was persisting to know.
Within the question and answer Barrita said that he would work toward making the flyers available in other languages and that suggestion from ASCC members would be greatly appreciated.
