The third annual spring festival was held in the Student Center on March 7.
The festival is a cooperation between the Cerritos Chinese School Association and Cerritos College.
Danita Kurtz, coordinator of international students, stated, “It is a celebration to show the different ethnic groups that are in the Cerritos area.”
Guests that attended the festival were able to watch performances from the different schools, participate in the different workshops and watch a Royal Fashion Show.
“It is a great way for people to get together for entertainment, education and to learn about each other,” Vice President of Student Services Stephen Johnson, said.
The event creates an atmosphere of cooperation among different cultures that surround the Cerritos College, Kurtz said.
Kurtz continued, “It enriches everyone’s lives to be able to experience different cultures.”
Different performances were presented from different school to the guest throughout the festival.
Performances were done such as the Lion Dance, Silk Fan Dance, Girl Quartet Dance and the Red Coral Dance.
Guests were also able to participate in the little workshops that were set up such as making paper lanterns to hang as decorations and Chinese brush painting.
The Royal Fashion show had a variety of costumes which were worn during 48 B.C., 1122 B.C. and 755 A.D.
Bill Farmer, acting president of Cerritos College, participated in the Royal Fashion Show to show a Sung Dynasty High Official costume.
The event is for everyone and was advertised throughout the area of Cerritos, Norwalk and Bellflower as well as Cerritos College, Kurtz said.
The festival was created for the campus and community.
“It is open to everyone,” Johnson said, “and intended to be an opportunity for everyone to get together from the college and the surrounding cities.”
Children attending the event are also getting an introduction to Cerritos College.
“It’s a chance for many of these students to come on the Cerritos College campus and maybe they will attend school here,” Kurtz said. “As either children on the summer program or as regular students once they are ready to start college.”
“We have a wonderful tradition that we have here in the college,” Johnson stated, “and it’s a great event every year.”
