“Around the World in 80 Days” was the inspiration for the International Student Association’s (ISA) homecoming float this year.
They hoped their float would rise above those of the other clubs, and be the best for homecoming on Saturday.
The float would be showcase a variety of global historic landmarks, a semi-globe, and different flying machines and hot-air balloons, and other international decorations.
The supplies that they used were collectively accrued from materials bought at stores and things brought in from some of the students own houses.
The club’s members consist of several different races and nationalities.
According to the Cerritos College website, “The International Student Association was established to create a sense of community between international students and domestic students. ISA promotes activities geared towards intercultural exchange and increase awareness and tolerance in the many diversities present in the campus.”
Their float with all of its representations of foreign cultures is meant to display the club’s principles.
According to Joseph Silva, philosophy major and president of ISA, members of the club “get involved in all sorts of other activities.
“If you look at a lot of the students in the club, they’re also part of many other clubs, because these are just very active students. It’s just an aspect of the school we try to encourage other international student involvement on campus, so that’s essentially what we do.”
That diverse ambition is what Silva says the club hoped would be reflected from the “Around the World in 80 Days” homecoming float.
