Lowering student fees was once again discussed during the ASCC Cabinet meeting on Monday.
In addition, volunteers were being sought to help Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) run for reelection.
ASCC President Paulo Amaral said that he had a chance to read the proposal and added that he “strongly approves and supports (lowering the tuition).”
The Grass Roots Campaign measure which was introduced by Patrick Callahan, coordinator of judicial affairs, would lower the tuition from the current $26 per unit a semester to $20 per unit, if it makes it to the November ballot.
Six hundred thousand signatures from community college students are needed in order to have the measure on the ballot.
As for the funding for the proposal Amaral, said that it is not known where the money is currently coming from.
Cabinet members agreed that there needed to be more time to read and have a better understanding of what the proposal consistent of.
Cerritos College students like Celine Estrada, elementary education major, said that the campaign sounds like a good idea.
“I would sign the petition to lower the fees,” she said adding, “but at this point where the tuition is right now (at $26 per unit) what can the students do about it?”
Estrada said that this semester she is taking two classes that cost her approximately $180 but, she believes that $18 per unit would be fair.
Five volunteers are also needed to begin to help Sanchez reelection campaign and Amaral encouraged any Cabinet member interested to sign up.
“This opportunity is a great way for any (Cabinet member) to meet city, state, and federal officials,” he commented, “because Sanchez has been supportive of Cerritos College.”
