Peter Nyguen, Cerritos College Faculty Federation member addressed Senate members Wednesday in hopes of clearing up any misunderstanding of the proposal that was brought forth to the Senate’s meeting on Feb. 8.
Nyguen said that there has been one side that has been heard during the negotiations between the Board and CCFF as far as salary contracts and keeping peer evaluations in place.
The two complaints that he has heard during the last few days were the maintaining of non-arbitration and rehiring of faculty.
In addition, he said, “never punish the party that has showed up in regards in the continued resolution.”
Furthermore, “the faculty has not mislead you (the Senate),” he explained, “because if there was a decision that was made by the district that then goes to the Board of Trustees that is illegal.”
Nyguen wanted to emphasize that the CCFF exclusively represents part-time faculty but not all faculty.
Party Whip, Lexie Guerrero said that she had surveyed Cerritos College students about whether or not the Senate should be involved in resolving the contract dispute between the CCFF and the Board of Trustees.
Guerrero added that she had ask 120 students because, “(not all) students know what is going on, and the Senate represents the students here on campus.”
Senate members were quick to question her intentions.
“The question that you asked the students was biased,” Senator Karla Marquez said.
Of the 120 students that we polled Guerrero said that she showed the bill only to 10 to 25 students.
Senator Ivan Pulido added that to ask only 120 students, “those students can not come to a informed decision.”
However, Senator Socorro Munoz questioned ,”why didn’t you show the bill to all of the students you asked?”
In other words, Munoz asked if the only reason why she asked the question was, “so (Guerrero) could get out of their face?”
“It was only 10-25 who cared,” Guerrero said.
Revisions of the resolution were presented by Marquez in which it stated:
? The ASCC Senate has reviewed the information on disputed contracts items and according to the definition of arbitration in which ‘a method of dispute resolution involving one or more neutral parties who are usually agreed to by the disputing parties and whose decision is binding and therefore the ASCC supports maintain binding arbitration.
? Job security is important to maintain quality instructors and education and the ASCC supports adjunct faculty consideration for re-hire at Cerritos College.
Both resolutions were passed in a vote of 13-1 but for Sergeant at Arms Oskar Ruiz he believed that coming up with the resolution was a waste of time because, “there is no commitment end (the dispute) by both the CCFF and Board.”
