The Cerritos College football team faced the defending national champions, Mount San Antonio College, in the Southern California Championship game last Saturday and the Mounties were able to consistently stifle the Falcons ending in a 51-0 loss for the Falcons.
The Mounties held the Falcons to only nine first downs through the game, and not giving up the first one until the third quarter.
Quarterback Kane Wilson made four completions on 14 attempts and had two interceptions and was sacked five times.
Falcons linebacker David Lopez had a productive game for the Falcons earning the games defensives play of the game for the second consecutive week after winning it in the SoCal bowl win over saddleback college.
“They were just hungrier [for the win] than we were,” Lopez said.
Arguments among teammates and coaches began to break out from frustration on the Falcons’ sideline.
Safety Chris Metcalf and Quarterback Wilson were engaged in a brief verbal confrontation before being broken up by several teammates.
Falcons’ running back, Daveon Barner, believes nothing more could’ve been done by his team to change the outcome of the game.
“I wouldn’t change anything that we did, we played our best but they just showed that they were the better team today,” Barner said.
In the last minutes of the fourth quarter, Barner ran the ball over a pile of Falcons and Mounties in what would have been the Falcons only score of the game. The touchdown was called back by the referees who said Barner’s knee had hit the ground while he attempted to pass the pile.
“One of our problems today was penalties, but there were definitely some bad calls [on Saturday],” Mazzotta said.
