Cerritos College was finally down to its last seven candidates for homecoming queen and the elections took place as a two day voting event on October 13 and 14.
Students at Cerritos College were able to vote for their preferred homecoming princess at the social science patio and student center patio, where different students campaigned for one of the seven homecoming candidates.
Homecoming elections started on Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The campaign had students supporting the candidates by passing out candy and flyers.
Homecoming court princesses themselves were out walking around the campus getting people involved into the activity, such as Christina Leyva.
“I want students to get more aware of activities we have here on campus, I feel that people just come to school and leave. I was like that before I started to get into clubs, but now that I’m involved I meet a lot of great people and I would like others to have the same opportunity,” Leyva said.
The homecoming candidates, along with their friends and family, showed off picket signs of the candidates and passed out flyers to each student.
Supporter and friend of Christina Leyva, Karen Islas, administrative major, thinks that making Leyva queen would represent the school for her involvement with Cerritos College.
“I think its important to have a homecoming queen because I see it as someone who represents Cerritos College, just like how we have a president and homecoming queen, she’s (christina leyva) doing everything for the school. I think she is someone who is good enough to represent the school,” Islas said.
Nazaret Montes Deoca, criminal justice major, took the time to vote for a queen because of their school spirit as well for their hard work to keep the events going on for students such as herself.
“Its interesting to see that there are activities still going on and people out there that want to keep the school spirit, and its not like high school, its actually more like college spirit and its nice to participate in the events being held,” Deoca said.
With the extracurricular involvement in school, the homecoming candidates each represented the clubs and organizations that they were in.
Supporters for the homecoming candidates helped out the princesses by campaigning since the morning.
Students that were in the same clubs as the homecoming candidates were out on the school’s campus telling students to vote for their representative of their club to show how involved the candidate is in Cerritos College.
Homecoming candidate, Arielle Pavone, made her achievements by making it as a candidate from the participation that she took within Cerritos College clubs.
“I’ve joined two clubs since campaigning started and I met random people who I got to exchange numbers with. Its a really good social experience,” Pavone said.
