The students of Cerritos College were welcomed back to the campus for a new semester with the Welcome Back Day event held on Jan. 15.
The school provided live music, food from In-N-Out, and information booths of the different organizations on campus.
Cory Newman, the DJ present at the event and owner of DJ Party Pros, has hosted this event for seven years.
He says he loves Cerritos College and feels a part of it because the people are very friendly.
He tries to be at every school event and works about 12 events each year. Newman has a variety of music on his playlist to play for the students, from punta and rock to hip hop.
“I prefer to take requests from the students because it’s their school and their event so I like to play music they like to listen to,” Newman said.
Students stood in line outside by the Hill get their free In-N-Out burger with chips and a soda.
The burgers provided by In-N-Out were only offered to those who had their Cerritos College ID with their purple activities sticker.
But not all students wanted to wait in the heat. Students like Cynthia Mendoza waited in the shade for the line to go down to get food.
There were many booths with information that the students came across while they waited for there food.
John De Jesus said, “I do not think this event is useful because people are not looking at the booths for the information.”
Even though he did not find the information they provided useful, he did find his free highlighter given to him from one of the booths to be helpful to continue with his school work.
On the other hand, Abigail Benitez found all the information to be resourceful because she found information on the Teacher TRAC.
The Teacher TRAC lets her know which classes are needed to get her teaching degree. She found it “really cool to wait in line and pick up information while you wait.”
One of the many booths set up was the American Red Cross and representing them was Rob Torrez.
The booth was set up so people can sign up to donate blood.
Torrez stated, “Cerritos College is the best college to donate blood. We are doing good but we can always do better. It is a very easy thing to do and everyone should get involved because one pint can save three lives.”
