Professor of Welding Fred Henry passed away at the age of 67 in his home in Brea, Feb. 7. He taught over 3000 students who had become certificated and licensed welders many of whom have obtained high paying jobs. Dean of the Technology Division Steve Berklite was on the hiring committee when Henry was hired Jan. 13, 1986. “He was highly committed to his trade, welding, amazingly committed to his students, just did an unbelievable job” said Berklite. Prior to Henry joining the Cerritos College staff, he worked for 27 years in the welding field and earning 26 welding certificates. Among his other responsibilities, Henry served on the Planning and Budget committee for 10 years. “He played a real important role on campus on a lot of critical committees, Budget and Planning on campus, keeping everyone involved and informed” said Berklite. Professor in Welding Bruce Johnson has worked with Henry for 24 years. Johnson describes him as always happy, never had a bad day or upset about anything. “He told us how to live our lives by example, never by telling” stated Johnson. For some colleagues and students Henry’s passing came as a shock because he appeared to be healthy. Laura Mejia business administration and accounting major said, “everyone thought he would out live us all, he was healthy.” According to Berklite, Henry has been on medication due to health issues that people weren’t aware of. Henry retired from Cerritos College May 22, 2009 , but continued to volunteer on campus to assist students. Henry leaves behind his wife Linda Henry and no children. |
