The Cerritos College baseball team (21-14) won the South Coast Conference and will play against Cuesta College (22-14) on Friday in their first game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Cerritos enters the series as the No. 8 seed and Cuesta at No. 9.
Head coach Ken Gaylord has taken the Cerritos baseball team to the Southern California Regional playoffs now 15 times in his 18 years as head coach.
The Falcons did not qualify for the playoffs last season under in-term Head coach Jack Brooks.
Gaylord thinks the Cuesta team is a good matchup for Cerritos.
“They are a good team. We are going to have to play well and aggressively. They are well rounded and have good athletes,” he said.
The two teams did not play this season, but starting pitcher Chris Rodriguez is aware of two pitchers from the other dugout.
“They seem pretty good from their stats, but we will see,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez and the rest of the players have finished the regular season successfully and feel it may carry on to the post season.
“I’m feeling pretty confident, our team is really good. We are on a role,” he said, “I think we just started on it going to playoffs and I feel we haven’t even hit our potential”.
If the Cerritos baseball team is victorious, the team will play the winner of the No. 1 seed, Rio Hondo College (32-2) match-up against the bottom seeded match-up winner.
The first playoff games will take place May 3, between the bottom four seeded teams and they are single elimination.
The Cerritos College series will be a best of three with the second game scheduled the following Saturday.
