The Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League held tryouts for the upcoming season on Saturday at Falcon Stadium.
Jim Fassel, current Locomotive Head Coach, General Manager and President, believes the chances that players get picked up are very high.
“A lot of talented players will show up and the odds are high that we will take a handful to training camp with a shot at making our final roster,” he said.
“They are given a genuine look and if they are good enough, they will have a shot at making the team.”
Fassel spent seven years coaching the New York Giants (FROM) and he is entering his third season with the Locomotives.
The agents and players found out about the tryouts through the Locomotive’s website.
Several members of the coaching staff, including director of personnel, Randy Ball, were on the field for the duration of the tryouts.
“Regarding the turn-out of players, it has been great. The Cerritos College coaches are great and the facilities are tremendous,” Ball said.
Tight end Nick Larson, was trying out and he believes his big frame and footwork may help him make it through the first cut.
“I am not getting too many looks, but I have to just take every opportunity I can out here. Hopefully they like what they see and if not, I have to keep practicing,” he said.
The six-foot-eight, 248 pound Larson played four years of basketball for the University of Northern Arizona and one year of football.
Dwayne Wilkes, an agent for Sports Management Worldwide, had four of his players tryout on Saturday.
“It’s really like a cattle call right now because its hard to see what they are looking for,” he said.
“As long as they do what is told of them then they should be fine,” He said.
One player who has already earned a spot on the roster is former University of Nebraska safety Major Culbert.
“My try-out went well. You just have to do the small things. Everyone is going to run fast or do the position drills good, its really the small things,” he said.
Culbert was dismissed from the Huskers in the spring of 2009 and then transferred to Abilene Christian University.
