An orchestra exchange concert featuring the California Baptist University String Ensemble and the Cerritos College Orchestra was held on Oct. 24.
The string ensemble, composed of 19 musicians, performed first with the list of songs:
- Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod,”
- George F. Handel’s “A Tempo Guisto” and “Allegro” from Concerto Grosso in G Major Op. 6, No.1,
- Edvar Grieg’s “Air,” “Sarabande” and “Gavore-Musette” from Holberg’s Suite, Op. 40 and
- Peter I. Tchaikovsky’s “March” from The Nutcracker.
Dr. Angela Brand, director, said she chose the list of songs, “to show the range of musicality (the ensemble) is cabable of.”
David Betancourt, director of the Cerritos College Orchestra, opened the orchestra’s performance with Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville, Overture.”
“Most (from the audience) probably know (it) really well,” Betancourt said.
The song has been known to be in Bugs Bunny cartoons.
The other songs the orchestra played are:
- Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov’s “Procession of the Sardar” from Caucasian Sketches,
- Jean-Joseph Mouret’s “Rondeau” from Premiere Suite,
- Henry Purcell’s “Chacony” and
- Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Presto” and “Allegro con Brio” from Symphony No. 7 in A Major.
“(This selection) has a certain level of excitement and variety,” Betacourt said, who wanted to challenge the orchestra to play its best.
There was going to be a piano concharto, but it was delayed until Dec. 3.
“We had an issue with the instruments,” Betancourt said.
